I had the pleasure to sit down with Reytheda Jackson (AKA Rey) from Simple and Chic Events. She is based out of Fort Worth, TX and really does it all. From destination weddings to event design to event planning, Simple and Chic Events provides you the support you need for any part of your wedding. I hope you love this interview as much as I did!
Priya: Tell us a little about yourself. How did you get into the wedding business? Why do you love event planning?
Rey: I am the mom to an adorable 8-month-old little guy and the wife of a fantastic photographer. In my free time, I enjoy reading, watching a good movie and eating with friends and family.
Starting it was never my plan to be a wedding planner. I went to school with hopes to be an orthodontist, and I worked in the dental field for ten years. When I graduated from college, I had a lot of free time on my hands, so I decided to volunteer for a nonprofit organization working with them to plan events.
That started my love for planning, after a few months a friend connected me a planner who was looking for help on a large wedding. From then on I was hooked! I researched all I could and set up coffee dates to meet new vendors.
The reason I love event planning:
1. I have the opportunity to guide brides through their planning journey and allow them to be a bride only on their wedding day.
2. I love to create different celebrations for each bride.
Priya: How do you choose a wedding planner that is right for you for a destination wedding?
Rey: Choosing a planner for your destination wedding is just the same as selecting a planner for your local wedding. You want to pick someone that is familiar with your destination. Also, make sure you interview them so they will work well with you.
Priya: I understand most hotels provide wedding planners for destination weddings. What are the advantage and disadvantages?
Rey: While it is true that some hotels offer wedding planners for their weddings, the advantage is that they are very familiar with the venue. They know all the rules and regulations, and they may be able to provide vendor recommendations. The disadvantage is that they may only care about the venue and not provide you with personal attention and attention to detail that hiring your planner would provide for you.
Priya: If a couple wants a destination wedding, what is a piece of advice you would offer?
Rey: Don't try to do it all yourselves. Enlist the help of a wedding planner and a travel agent. It will make your life a lot easier and stressful.
Priya: How do you choose the right venue to host a destination wedding?
Rey: Choose your venue based on your needs, vision for your wedding and your guests. If your friends have children who will be traveling with them, then you don't want to pick adults only resort or if you are having adults you don't want to choose a family vacation spot.
Priya: Do you have any other recommendations for couples planning a destination wedding?
Rey: Communication with your guests is essential. Make sure they understand the traveling details and any additional expenses they may incur. Also, don't forget to organize transportation for your guests when they arrive.
